Despite getting much critical acclaim and even cementing itself as one of the highest rated games of all times, FormSoftware’s latest release and the spiritual successor to the Dark Souls series of video games, Elden Ring is having a tough time on Steam. At the time of writing this article, the game had 72.35% positive reviews, with 29,489 negative reviews.

It is surprising to note that a game of Elden Ring’s caliber too, has to deal with performance issues. But it all boils down to the game’s squiffy performance on PC that the players have to deal with. It is also something that many of the early reviewers had to deal with. However, it was hoped that a day one patch would address these issues.

Now, while the patch did squash some of the major bugs that had been detected in the early build, players are still experiencing, stuttering, major drops in frame rates, screen tearing and crashes. Both the positive as well as the negative reviews about the game are complaining about the poor optimization for the PC port.

One of the reviewers on Steam writes that the game is a “typical FormSoftware PC port”. In addition to that, several players are also lamenting about the Easy Anti-Cheat which is being used for Elden Ring, which has made it even harder for the modders to work around and release mods that may have addressed the issues till the developers release patches.

It also seems like several players are also complaining about the extremely sporadic controller support for the game, with one reviewer on Steam writing that it only works about “80% of the time”. And while it is still not clear as to why this problem is happening, it is a choice than a bug. Reviews on Steam have also complained about the lack of ultrawide support and the 60fps cap for the PC port of Elden Ring.

While many have been complaining about the game’s poor performance, many have also reported about their smooth experience, while playing Elden Ring. Several have reported about their smooth experience where they have encountered little to no issues during their gameplay. On one hand, some of the reviewers on Steam have written about the massive stuttering that they have been facing, while running the game, some others on Steam, on the other hand, have reviewed that the game has been running smoothly on their mid range rigs, with very little to almost no issues.

Poor optimization had always been a massive concern for many, prior to the launch of Elden Ring, considering the really beefy specifications for the game as well as FormSoftware’s past history and track record. In fact, many had even expected that some players would be having a very hard time, running the game, on their PC.

Bandai Namco, has released an update acknowledging the issues arising due to the Easy Anti-Cheat as well as the fluctuating frame rates, on its official website, stating that, “We will be constantly working to improve the game so that it can be played comfortably on various PC environments and platforms.

Elden Ring developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco released today, i.e., February 25, 2022. The game will be releasing on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation® 4, PlayStation® 5. The game won the Most Anticipated Game Award at The Game Awards 2021, for the second consecutive time.

Elden Ring has been made in collaboration with fantasy novelist George R. R. Martin and game director Hidetaka Miyazaki. The game, being hailed as the spiritual successor of the Dark Souls series of video games by FormSoftware, was quite possibly the most anticipated title, in recent times. And if the rave reviews on Metacritic are anything to go by, the game is actually living up to all the anticipation that had built around it, over the years. However, the PC port of the game, as of now, seems to be facing some major issues.

Speaking of Elden Ring the twenty four hour peak for the game on Steam, as per SteamDB, stands at 764,835 concurrent players, which is slightly behind the recently released Lost Ark whose twenty four hour peak stands at 915,628. Sixty minutes into the launch, the number of concurrent players playing Elden Ring had crossed 616,891 players, SteamDB showed. And this number continued climbing quite steadily. In fact, just twenty minutes into the launch, the number of concurrent players reached 149,702, thereby making the game FormSoftware’s biggest title on Steam.
