Did The Steam Deck Impress Geoff Keighley? Find Out What He Thinks About Valve's Handheld PC Gaming Device

The Steam Deck is now available for the first batch of reservation holders to order. Read on to find out what industry veteran, Geoff Keighley, has to say about it.

Valve Releases A Brand New Trailer To Celebrate The Steam Deck’s Launch

It was only yesterday that we had reported about Valve’s plans ahead for a Steam Deck 2, even before its handheld PC gaming device released. However, launch day is upon us now and gaming industry veteran, Geoff Keighley is all praises about it. In a thread that Keighley has posted from his official Twitter account, he enumerates all the things that he is loving (and not so much), about the device. We have embedded parts of the thread here in our post, as well.

The Steam Deck is a revelatory new handheld PC from Valve.

It really is Steam in your (oversized) pocket, and a stunning debut from Valve of a full-stack gaming machine. A 🧵with some observations based on my time with it…. pic.twitter.com/mU4cYn1g7s

So, speaking about performance, Keighley notes, “It’s the real deal when it comes to gameplay/game experience. The graphics/sound/controls are as good as PC/console. Here you can play Forza Horizon 5 or God of War or Death Stranding or Elden Ring and it FEELS like the full, uncompromised experience.” He also adds to it by saying that, “Big bonus: It’s amazing to have your full Steam library. Not every game works (yet), but a lot of them do. The Deck ends up being like a SteamPass, all your games/friends carry forward with you, nothing to re buy.

However, as Keighley also explains in this thread, it is not all great news for the Steam Deck either. Keighley has observed that as of now, the biggest drawback for the device, according to him, is its battery life. He notes that the battery life is “around 2 hours if you are playing a big 3D game at high frame rate”, adding that “You can tweak brightness/even limit frame rate to get a little more juice, but it’s the biggest drawback right now for me.

Personally, I find myself spending MORE time playing games now that I have a Deck — it loads super fast from suspend, and the screen quality/ergonomics make it very fun to play.

When it’s all working (and when you have battery life), Steam Deck is a glimpse of the future.

Keighley also provides fair warning that the Steam Deck is buggy as well. However, he also goes on to state that Valve is constantly working to remedy that. He notes that the company “seems to be shipping updates to the OS daily and fixing issues on the fly. (They did two OS updates yesterday). So it’s a little like a PC in that way, lots of patching. Some games just don’t load or glitch out, but lots work GREAT.

The much awaited launch of the Steam Deck, Valve’s new handheld PC gaming device just happened. The device is now available for order, for the first batch of reservation holders. The recipients of the emails, will then have 72 hours to book their devices, at the end of which, their slot will expire and the next person in line, on the reservation list will get a chance to book. Moreover, the first batch of orders will be shipped out by Valve starting February 28, 2022.

Earlier, it was announced that Valve had updated the Steam library of the users. The libraries of Steam users will now be showing the compatibility of their games with the Steam Deck. The announcement also stated that, “The Steam back catalog is huge, and new titles are releasing every day” and the company had “ramped up” the testing, adding that “We’re testing new titles constantly and are going to continue past launch”.
